Government grant supports continued provision of free meals
Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, Charter House have delivered more than 18,000 free meals to vulnerable people across Burnley and Padiham. Now have secured a grant of £76,000 to continue our amazing work, we are delighted.
Charter House Manager Jason Smith explains
“We couldn’t be happier to have had this fantastic funding boost from the Coronavirus Community Support Fund which is distributed by The National Lottery Community Fund). It will help us to maintain our Community Welfare Meals programme. It will also support us in being able to open our disability daycare service again when the time comes. It’s a huge relief as it means we can confidently carry on with this community relief project with added peace of mind about the future.
Charter House – Keeping busy over lockdown
“We are currently supplying anyone over 65, anyone that’s shielding and anyone with a disability in the Burnley and Padiham areas. They receive a daily free meal delivered to their doorstep and we also provide free packed lunches to children.
“Already, up to this point, we’ve extended our kitchen facilities and had the backing of some fantastic and generous volunteers. We have now become recognised as one of the biggest Covid responders in Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale.

What will the funding be used for?
“Successfully bidding for this latest funding will help cover core costs of continuing to provide the service. As a not-for-profit organisation it will also help us to maintain the building and infrastructure and allow us to create three new posts.
Where does the money come from?
“The £76,000 comes from the £200m the Government made available to small and medium organisations in England. The funding stream has two key objectives:
• To increase community support to vulnerable people affected by the COVID-19 crisis
• To reduce temporary closures of essential charities and social enterprises.
“Grants have been designed to allow organisations like ours to meet service costs while experiencing unavoidable income disruption. The funding will also allow organisations to refocus services to address more immediate beneficiary needs in light of COVID-19. Charter House has already done this with the Community Welfare Meals Project.
“We were thrilled to secure the funding. It eases our financial pressures and is a testament to all our hard work. It’s a pleasure for our staff and volunteers to see the service recognised as being of such value.
“From all of us here at Charter House Resource Centre, we’d like to say a BIG thank you to The Government and The National Lottery Community Fund.”
